On 20th of November 2020, we had the opportunity to participate to this special online event highlighting community struggles against the global gold-mining industry. The event was brought together by Friends of the Earth Northern Ireland, Social Change Initiative, Irish Research Council, NUI Galway and Young Friends of the Earth Europe.
We had the chance to hear stories from Peru, Cyprus and the Sperrin Mountains.
We’re delighted to host:
- Milton Sanchez Cubas from Celendin, Peru. Read more about how Milton was criminalised because of his position as a community leader defending the rights of his people and their mountain lakes.
- Evi and Thea from Cyprus to hear of their campaign to defend their mountains from Historical and Environmental Group of Mathiatis.
- Fidelma O’Kane from Save Our Sperrins and Emmet McAleer, local representative of the people of Fermanagh and Omagh.
- Hal Rhoades of the Yes to Life No to Mining global network. Hal gave us an overview of gold in the context of crises, impact and criticality.
