YFoEE’s info pack: How to reach out to policy-makers

21/07/2021 Resources System:Reset

Communicating the Youth Proposal for a Just Green Deal for Europe and beyond

Young Friends of the Earth Europe has prepared a simple guide on how to reach out to policy-makers as part of the SYSTEM:RESET project.

Talking with policy-makers, and in particular Members of the European Parliament (MEP’s), is an important and fun part of what we do! During the last months, we have organized workshops on how to talk to MEPs’ and how to set up a meeting with MEP’s to have a discussion with them.

However, we also want to encourage you to engage in talks with MEP’s specifically from your own country. To be able to talk to your local MEPs’, it is important to make an appointment for a meeting well in advance. It could also be influential to organise a meeting before an important vote/negotiation at the European Parliament or at international level (for example the climate talks at COP26). To do that, you can follow the below steps:

  1. Check advocacy tips here.
  2. Go to https://www.europarl.europa.eu/meps/en/home and choose your country. Press ‘show list’ to find all the MEPs’ from your country.
  3. Decide which MEPs’ you would like to approach. Take a look at the parties and committees they are involved in.
  4. Click on the MEP you’d like to contact and press the small envelope under her/his/their picture. This will show you the MEP’s contact information.
  5. Send an email requesting a meeting. You can use the email template we have provided here.
  6. Prepare yourself before the meeting i.e. read the Youth Proposal, draft questions and key messages that you would like to discuss/address during the meeting.

Youth proposal for Green New Deal

  • You can use this Youth Proposal for a Green Deal for Europe, which  presents a narrative of the future we want and of the urgent intersectional transformation that is needed in our society.
  • It includes visions from 3300+ young people with different backgrounds and identities across Europe for a socially just and ecologically sound future and highlights the momentum for system change.
