Friends of the Earth Europe is seeking an:
Intern – Network Development (including Young Friends of the Earth Europe)

Contract period: 7th May 2012 – 6th November 2012
Full time and working in the FoEE office in Brussels

Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) campaigns for sustainable and just societies and for the protection of the environment. It unites more than 30 national organisations with thousands of local groups and is part of the world’s largest grassroots environmental network, Friends of the Earth International. Young Friends of the Earth Europe (Young FoEE) is a grassroots network of young people and youth organisations working collectively on a local, national and European level. It unites member groups from 15 countries across Europe, bringing together and training young people to campaign for and share knowledge and ideas on social and environmental justice.
This internship is an excellent opportunity to join one of the leading green NGOs in Brussels, and to work closely with a vibrant network of national member organisations, as well as with the network of Young Friends of the Earth groups.
Work will include supporting the planning and implementing capacity building and skill-sharing with groups from the FoEE network, and supporting the organisation of events, and youth campaigning, with the Young FoEE network.
You will be assisting and working alongside the Network Development coordinator and Young FoEE coordinator, as part of the Network Development team.

Main work of the Network Development team:

  • Planning and delivery of capacity building for FoEE member groups to run successful campaigns on a variety of environmental justice topics;
  • Assessment of capacity building needs and offers of member groups, and FoEE office staff;
  • Evaluation and monitoring of capacity building interventions;
  • Supporting membership development in the FoEE network, including dealing with new membership requests;
  • Supporting the work and development of the youth member-led Young FoEE network

Goals and Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Support organisation and facilitation of capacity building events, and network meetings, with the FoEE network – including a 4-day training event on mobilisation;
  • Process self-assessment questionnaire conducted with FoEE network;
  • Support monitoring and evaluation of capacity building interventions;
  • Deliver external communications via web, email and telephone to mobilise for two Young FoEE network events, including communication with prospective participants and other youth and campaigning organisations;
  • Help with preparations of the programme and practical arrangements for workshops and speakers at two Young FoEE events;
  • Support the work of Young FoEE campaign working groups;
  • Support the daily work of the Network Development team.

Applicants should demonstrate the following attributes:

  • Commitment to the values, vision and mission of Friends of the Earth;
  • Experience of work in a network of campaigning and/or youth organisations;
  • Strong organisational and time management skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including an outgoing and confident telephone manner;
  • Ability to work independently and take the initiative on projects;
  • Ability to solve problems under pressure and to face unexpected situations;
  • Fluency in English;
  • Experience as social/environmental activist or within an NGO;
  • IT literacy (including Microsoft Word/Excel).

The following attributes are also desirable (but not essential):

  • Experience of facilitating meetings and delivering capacity building/skill-sharing/training on a variety of topics;
  • Good research and analytical skills;
  • Knowledge and/or experience of organisational development or campaign planning;
  • Ability to communicate in French and/or Dutch;
  • Previous experience with Young Friends of the Earth, Friends of the Earth, or one of our allies.

The intern will be based in our office in Brussels, for 6 months (full-time, 5 days a week).
FoEE offers a highly motivating working environment in an international NGO and office located in an environmentally friendly NGO building.
Starting date: 7th May 2012
Remuneration: 800 euro/month
