Young Friends of the Earth Europe Development Officer

Young Friends of the Earth Europe (Young FoEE) is a grassroots network of young people and youth organisations working collectively on a local, national and European level. It unites member groups from 15 countries across Europe, bringing together and training young people to campaign for and share knowledge and ideas on social and environmental justice. Young FoEE is an important and dynamic part of Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) – an organisation that campaigns for sustainable and just societies and for the protection of the environment. It unites more than 30 national organisations with thousands of local groups and is part of the world’s largest grassroots environmental network, Friends of the Earth International.
This position is an excellent opportunity to join one of the leading green NGOs in Brussels, and to work closely with the growing network of Young Friends of the Earth groups.
Work will include supporting the working groups and individuals in the Young FoEE network, planning and implementing high quality events, and ensuring impactful youth campaigning.
You will work alongside the Network Development coordinator, as part of the Network Development team, and will also be accountable to a steering group made up of volunteers from the Young FoEE network.
Activities of the Young FoEE network include:
• Facilitating a strong, diverse and inclusive youth network, with active individuals and member organisations from across Europe, as part of the Friends of the Earth Europe network
• Campaigning and mobilising on topics including Climate Justice and Food & Agriculture in impactful and creative ways
• Building the capacity of young volunteers and activists with skills and experience for successful campaigning, bringing about change in their local and national contexts, and creating solidarity between member groups
Goals and Responsibilities of the position include:
• Coordination of a growing and increasingly autonomous network of youth groups and young activists
• Helping young volunteers and activists to gain the skills and knowledge to make effective contributions at all levels and activities of (Young) FoEE and its member groups
• Supporting the development of national and European-level campaigns that are impactful and relevant to young people
• Organising attractive and impactful joint network events, campaigns and activities
• Creating a distinctive and well-recognised Young FoEE identity among European youth
• Support FoEE member organisations to establish and/or develop youth groups and/or projects
• Ensure Young FoEE continues to work in support of FoEE strategic aims and campaigns
• Produce and circulate a range of communications materials and resources to inform Young FoEE members and attract potential members, collaborators and supporters, including regular newsletters and an up-to-date website
• Draft and manage the allocated Young FoEE budget in line with FoEE finance policy and donor requirements
• Leading all fundraising activities on behalf of Young FoEE, including drafting applications, reporting and ensuring funder requirements are met
Applicants should demonstrate the following attributes:
• A commitment to FoEE’s vision, mission and values, and a personal commitment to environmental and social justice
• Excellent organising, project management and facilitation skills
• A commitment to democratic, participative and consensus-based working methods, including experience of work (including voluntary work) within a grassroots and/or youth network, and working with volunteers from diverse cultural backgrounds and/or a commitment to equality and interculturalism.
• Ability to work with a range of individuals, supporting them to develop their capacities
• Ability to balance leadership and service in relation to a voluntary Board or Steering Group
• Ability to advocate for a youth perspective, particularly with colleagues in Brussels and in Member Organisations
• Ability to multi-task, set priorities, manage time efficiently and work well under pressure
• Strong teamwork skills and a proven ability to motivate oneself
• Proficient in Microsoft Office programmes
• A good command of English, which is the working language for this post, and experience of drafting attractive and motivating written pieces
• Prepared to work occasional evenings and weekends and to travel abroad, sometimes on trips of several days
The following attributes are also desirable (but not essential):
• Ability to speak one or more other EU language (especially French or Dutch)
• Ability to write compelling fundraising applications
• Experience of having worked with a steering group, preferably within a European NGO
• Proficiency in web design and publishing software, as well as CRM databases
• Previous experience with Young Friends of the Earth, Friends of the Earth, or one of our allies
The position will be based in our office in Brussels (full-time, 5 days a week).

Starting date: 1st May 2015
Remuneration: 2260 Eur to 2479 Eur (brutto) depending on experience
