Thousands of young people strike for climate justice and radical action in Glasgow at COP26

05/11/2021 System:Reset

Glasgow, 5 November 2021. Thousands of activists from all over the world were out on the streets on Friday, as part of the school strike to demand immediate and meaningful action to tackle the climate emergency.

With thousands of young activists, Young Friends of the Earth Europe is calling for climate and social justice at the school strike in Glasgow. The climate crisis is significantly impacting people around the world with underrepresented people and youth suffering the most. We demand to be meaningfully included in decision-making processes, we demand a major system change: a SYSTEM:RESET.

We need integrated system change, not climate change. The planet is facing multiple integrated social, economic, health, and environmental challenges and only through radical and holistic system change can we prevent a climate catastrophe. We need systems that prioritise the health and well-being of people and the planet, not endless growth and profit. We want urgent intersectional transformation for a socially just and ecologically sound future.

We specifically demand that:

  • the rights, needs and interests of all people are being put above those of corporations;
  • the voices of the most affected youth, especially those facing intersected marginalization because of their gender, sexuality, race, disability, education, geographical location are being included in decision-making;
  • decision-making is transparent, belongs to the people, and includes the voices of marginalized individuals and communities.

“Decisions are made without our consent, the consent of young people. The minute we realise the power of our consent, that very minute, things start changing.” – Sara Mariza Vryonidi , Young Friends of the Earth Cyprus

“We demand a radical system change. We demand a system reset. We want to transform our societies so all living beings can live in harmony with nature and their eco-systems.” – Sofija Getova, Kolektiv Z, North Macedonia
