reCAP activists meet ministers to demand fairer farming

10/09/2012

Report by Anna Cortesi, Young Friends of the Earth Cyprus

Young Friends of the Earth Cyprus, along with Pancyprian Association of Organic Farmers organized a protest demonstration last Sunday, 9th of September, in Limassol’s medieval castle square, in light of the present Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) of the EU.

The action was planned as part of Young Friends of the Earth Europe’s reCAP campaign and coincided with a dinner being held for the 27 ministers of Agriculture of EU, currently being in Cyprus as part of talks for the EU presidency.

In Cyprus we were dreaming of a future with a reformed CAP were dietary and farming system is based on small scale, local production farms that will be in balance with the ecosystem of the planet. Volunteers from the two organizations treated the people attending in the square biological products, along with informational material and the position papers of Friends of the Earth for the reforming of CAP.

The 27 ministers of the EU along with their delegates were lucky enough to try some of the biological delicacies while Friends of the Earth Cyprus handed over to the Cyprus minister of Agriculture Mr. Sofoklis Aletraris a greeting “ironic” card for the 50th birthday of CAP, along with a Friends of the Earth Europe Position Paper for the reforming of CAP of EU.

Check out some great pictures of the action here.
