Love goes through the stomach

26/02/2015

Mladi Za Zemiata (Young Friends of the Earth Bulgaria) took part in an eco festival on a farmers market in Sofia celebrating both St. Valentine’s Day and Trifon Zarezan – The Bulgarian holiday of vine-growers and wine-makers.

Last summer, Mladi Za Zemiata hosted the YFoEE summer camp on Food & Agriculture, and ever since our main focus of work has been the  promotion of vegan nutrition and local and seasonal products. We have been writing articles on the topic and have created a culinary section on our website. On a monthy basis we publish seasonal vegan soup recipes to help others easily get through the transition to vegetarian and vegan nutrition.

Especially for our action on February 14th we translated into Bulgarian the Young Friends of the Earth Europe “Becoming a Vegetarian” 5 step short guide written by Anna Cortesi from Cyprus, also as a contribution to the work and mission of the YFoEE Food and Agriculture working group. The leaflet was uploaded on our site and distributed during the vegan action.

For the event we decided to cook and give out free vegan leek cream soup to all visitors at the festival, while explaining the different benefits of vegan nutrition. We wanted to cause minimum harm and zero waste with our action. That’s why all the ingredients for the soup were bought from the local farmers market. The soup was served with wholegrain bread with wooden spoons for multiple use.

All the visitors and farmers enjoyed our vegan action so much that we have been invited to attend the farmers market every month and to promote our seasonal vegan receipes
