Getting your hands dirty: farm visits in Denmark

28/05/2020 Growing Together

If you want to learn how to fix our farming system, you need to get your hands dirty.

As part of our Growing Together project, NOAH/Friends of the Earth Denmark have been inviting young people and future young farmers to visit regenerative agriculture projects, where they have been learning about regeneration of soil and biodiversity on farmland.

So far, they have run four workshops at farms with 10-15 people attending each, depending on the appropriate Covid-19 restrictions.

At each one, young people learned:

  • How to build a forest garden, and grow perennial plants
  • How to mix the perfect soil for seeds to grow, by getting the ratios of soil, sand and compost just right
  • How to get your farming project off the ground in a way that supports and is suppored by the local community, by creating a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project
  • How the EU’s biodiversity strategy can have a positive impact on agriculture but should be an even greater part of agricultural land use / planning
  • How to set up a carrot bed without pesticides

So far, at least 40 young people have attended one or more workshops, each of which has ended with a common outdoor dinner using local products.
